Rabbi Ben Shull 

Rabbi Ben Shull, a native of Philadelphia PA, was ordained in 1986 by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.  Subsequently, he received his Masters in Social Work from Columbia University in 1987.  Rabbi Shull has served congregations up and down the east coast, from Venice Florida to Woodcliff Lake NJ.  He also served as the executive director of the University at Albany Hillel working with college students and the Tampa Jewish Family Services.

Rabbi Shull has five children and three grandchildren.

Rabbi Shull is a big fan of Atlantic Coast Conference basketball.  He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and loves to see his Wahoos take on the teams of the Tobacco Road.  Rabbi Shull also loves to spend time on the beautiful Carolina beaches and in the majestic mountains of North Carolina.

Rabbi Shull  is proud to serve as Temple of Israel’s rabbi and also is presently serving as a chaplain for Liberty Homecare and Hospice. He considers it a privilege to be leading the congregation during this period of growth and change. The Jewish community faces many challenges locally and globally.  Guided by the wisdom of our past, he is confident that together we will build a brighter future in this lovely and historic area of North Carolina.

rabbi apple 2Rabbi James Apple ~ Rabbi Emeritus

Rabbi Emeritus James L. Apple, a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, was ordained by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1965. He earned his Doctorate of Theology from the Evangelical Bible College and Seminary in 1969.

He pastored congregations in Concord, NH, Columbia, SC, and Wilmington, NC.  From 1970-1996, Rabbi Apple served with distinction in the United States Navy Chaplain Corps. He retired with the rank of Captain. He retired with the rank of Captain.  He is also a certified Master Law Enforcement Chaplain.

Rabbi Apple has authored various magazine articles and three books, Payday, Someday, a collection of 16 sermons that he preached at Temple of Israel. He wrote about his rabbinate in the book What Kind of Job is This for a Nice Jewish Boy? and also wrote Payday Someday

He currently teaches at Cape Fear Community College.
